Getting a Machine to Darwin or Alice Springs: Freight, Timing and Spares
The Territory is a long way from the Gold Coast warehouse. How road, rail and barge freight works, what it costs, how long it takes and why a spares kit should travel with the machine.
Darwin is 3,400 kilometres from the Gold Coast by road. Alice Springs is 2,900. The distance is real, but the routes are busy freight corridors and a machine makes the trip every week.
Routes
To Darwin: road freight from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, then road or rail (the Adelaide–Darwin line via Adelaide, or road via Mount Isa and the Barkly). Typically one to two weeks door to door.
To Alice Springs: road via Adelaide and the Stuart Highway, or rail to Alice on the Ghan freight service. One to two weeks.
To Katherine, Tennant Creek and the highway towns: dropped off the Darwin or Alice run.
To remote communities: road to Darwin, then barge (Arnhem Land, the Tiwis, the Gulf) or dirt road in the dry. Quoted per community and dependent on barge schedules and the wet.
Depot or door
Depot collection in Darwin, Katherine or Alice suits buyers with a rated trailer. Door delivery by tilt tray is the norm for rural blocks and anything from the R32 PRO up.
What sets the price
Machine weight and size, road or rail, depot or door, and the season: wet-season road closures on the Barkly and Victoria highways delay road freight and push loads onto rail.
Order the spares with the machine
The single most useful piece of advice for a Territory buyer: order a spares kit with the machine so it travels on the same truck. Engine oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, hydraulic return filter, a set of bucket teeth, a hydraulic hose kit, a belt and, for remote buyers, a spare track. Engine parts for Kubota, Briggs & Stratton and Yanmar are stocked in Darwin and Alice; Rippa-specific items come by air from the Gold Coast, which takes days rather than weeks but is still a stoppage.
On arrival
Inspect before signing, photograph the serial plates, check the attachments are on the truck, and have diesel ready. If you are collecting from a depot, run your ute and trailer through the towing check first.
